Britt Clausson MD PhD, Consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist

obstetric care

Miss Clausson delivered her first baby in 1988, and has worked in obstetrics since then. She delivers private obstetric care in central London since 2002 (see consultant profile). She is a firm believer in women’s informed choice with regards to childbirth, and strives to deliver a committed and excellent care irrespective of the choices the pregnant women makes regarding antenatal care and delivery. Miss Clausson delivers individualised care, planned with the pregnant woman. She knows no two pregnancies are the same, and tries to find the best solutions for antenatal care and delivery for each pregnant woman.

Miss Clausson recognises that midwives are the backbone of obstetric care. For women who wish a large midwifery input Miss Clausson can provide shared care/midwifery led care.

For women who have their full obstetric care with Miss Clausson she is available on her mobile/bleep 24 hours a day, seven days a week, during their pregnancy and immediate postnatal period. During her rare absences a colleague will be able to replace, and as far as possible Miss Clausson tries to arrange cover by another female consultant if this is requested.

Miss Clausson delivers obstetric care at both The Portland Hospital and at The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth.

Experienced anaesthetists offer an epidural service at both hospitals, and Miss Clausson will naturally offer advice on options for pain relief in labour. Miss Clausson also has large experience with waterbirth, and will discuss this with clients if she believes it to be a suitable option for them.

antenatal consultations

The booking visit takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. Follow up visits usually require 20-30 minutes. Pregnant women are seen every 4 weeks up to 28 weeks pregnancy. From 28 weeks the visits are bi-weekly, and after 36 weeks women in their first pregnancy are seen every week.

Appointment times are flexible. Appointments can be made outside Miss Claussons regular antenatal clinics (evenings or weekends), at a premium cost.

Antenatal visits include measuring of blood pressure, urine dipstick, examination/measurement of the pregnant tummy, listening to the fetal heart (from the second trimester) and checking general wellbeing.

At each visit there is time for answering any questions. Advice regarding antenatal classes and parenthood skills/breastfeeding classes is offered. There is a thorough discussion about mode of delivery in the third trimester.

Miss Clausson can also perform one off antenatal check ups for women booked in the NHS, or in another country.

blood tests

Booking blood tests are recommended and arranged at the end of the first trimester, and a few bloodtests are repeated at 28 weeks.

attendance during delivery

Miss Clausson only books pregnant women with a due date at a time when she knows she will be in London and available. Clients will be told of leaves (longer than 24 hours) months in advance. For rapid labours Miss Clausson will arrive during the first stage of labour, and remain until the delivery is completed. For slower labour Miss Clausson will assess the woman in first stage of labour, but may leave to return for the second stage, and then remain until delivery is completed. Most obstetricians only attend labour for second stage, but Miss Clausson prefers to have a larger input into labour and delivery.
